Art Deco is one of the defining art and applied arts movements of the 20. century, which became especially prominent in the 1920s and 1930s ( 1920 1930). It derived its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes exhibition held in Paris in 1925. The new style reflected the dynamism of the modern age, technical progress, and urban life.

Art Deco jewelry broke away from the soft, natural lines of the preceding Art Nouveau style. They were replaced by geometric shapes, symmetry, clean lines, and strong contrasts. Squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, and stepped forms became one of the most characteristic stylistic features of these jewels.
