Diamonds are often identified by a single, easily recognizable image: a regular, round brilliant-cut diamond that produces intense white light and colored flashes. In antique jewelry, however, they reveal entirely different facets. Older stones may feature flat backs, high crowns, slightly irregular outlines, open lower culets, or be fashioned with only a few large facets. They are not necessarily of lesser quality; they were created in a different era, using different techniques, and for different lighting conditions.
A historical diamond cut is not merely a shape. It can reveal something about the available tools, the shape of the rough stone, the taste of the period, and how the jewelry was worn. At the same time, the cut alone is not proof of date. Old stones were reset over centuries, and modern stones could also be placed into old settings. Informed observation therefore always examines the stone, the setting, and the entire object as a whole.
From Hard Material to Crafted Light
The name of the diamond is linked to the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable or indomitable. The name is apt, yet easily misleading. The diamond is nature's hardest mineral, making it exceptionally resistant to scratching. This does not make it indestructible, however: its crystal structure contains cleavage planes, meaning that a strong impact from an unfavorable direction can chip the girdle or a protruding corner.
Natural diamonds are formed at great depths under high pressure and temperature. During the early centuries of historical trade, most known stones originated from the alluvial deposits of India. In the 18 th century, Brazil became a defining source, followed by the South African discoveries in the second half of the 19 th century, which multiplied the supply manifold. This changed not only the market. Larger quantities, industrializing workshops, and new machinery enabled increasingly regular, more precisely engineered cuts.
The primary goal of early masters was often the preservation of rare rough material. They followed the natural crystal form of the stone, removing only as much material as necessary to create polished surfaces. In contrast, the modern cutter can adhere to predetermined proportions and optical objectives, even if it requires sacrificing more weight from the rough stone.
What Does the Cut Actually Mean?
In colloquial speech, "cut" often refers to the outline: a round, oval, pear, emerald, or cushion-shaped stone. In a gemological sense, however, it encompasses much more. The cutting style also includes the system of facets, their proportions, symmetry, and polish.
The upper part of a faceted diamond is the crown, typically centered around the table. Running between the crown and the lower section—the pavilion—is the girdle, which is held by the setting. The lower tip of the pavilion is the culet; on older stones, this was often polished flat, making it visible as a bright or dark point when viewed from above. On a modern brilliant, the culet is mostly closed or very small.
Good light performance consists of three distinct phenomena. Brilliance is the returning white light, fire is the flashes broken down into the colors of the rainbow, and scintillation is the alternating light-and-dark pattern and sparkle that occurs with movement. The larger facets of older cuts often produce broader, slower flashes. The modern brilliant is capable of denser, faster sparkle. This is not simply a quality hierarchy, but rather distinct optical characters.
The Family Tree of Historical Cuts
Among the earliest European solutions was the point cut, which essentially emphasized the form of the natural octahedral crystal. This was followed by the table cut: the upper tip was sliced off to create a large, flat table. To modern eyes, these stones shine with restraint, but in their own time, the polished surface and transparency provided a remarkable spectacle.
The rose cut is a flat-backed stone domed on top, covered by triangular facets. It lacks the pavilion of a brilliant cut, allowing it to be fashioned from shallower rough material and to present a larger surface area relative to its actual weight. The rose cut is not a single rigid standard: the number of facets, the height of the dome, and the outline can vary. The trade term "Dutch rose" typically refers to a more developed, taller, multi-faceted variant, though its exact classification should not be determined from a photograph alone.
Developing from the 17 th century onward, brilliant-type cuts directed light back using both a crown and a pavilion. The old mine cut, often referred to in Hungarian as "régi bányacsiszolás," generally features a soft, cushion-like outline, a high crown, a small table, and a clearly visible culet. Due to its hand-crafted nature, two stones are rarely identical. This designation is not proof of any specific mine; historically it was associated with stones from Indian and Brazilian "old mines," but later became a cutting category.
At the end of the 19 th century, with the development of mechanical rounding, the old European cut emerged. Its outline is more regular and rounder than that of old mine stones, but its crown is generally higher, its table smaller, and its culet more prominent than those of the modern brilliant. Transitional forms between the two types also exist, so the boundary is not always sharp.
At the beginning of the 20 th century, the path of light was already being studied using mathematical and engineering methods. The system of the modern round brilliant, comprising 57 facets (or 58 including the culet), became increasingly standardized. The single cut or eight-cut, commonly used for tiny accent stones, employs far fewer facets, typically 17–18. Because of its larger, crisp flashes of light, it serves as an effective accent stone in both antique and 20 th-century jewelry.
How to Examine Antique Diamond Jewelry?
First, look not at the carat weight, but at the composition. Is the grading of stone sizes uniform? Is their cutting character similar? Do they react to light in the same way? A stone in an old setting that is remarkably flat, regular, and sparkles with a different rhythm may be a later replacement, but this is merely an indicator, not proof. Masters could work from old stock, and an object could be repaired multiple times during its own era.
It is worthwhile to observe general brightness in diffused white light, and then colored flashes under a more directional light source. Move the jewelry slowly, viewing it from more than a single angle. Under ten-times magnification, one can check the condition of the girdle, chipping, wear, the sharpness of facet edges, and whether the prongs securely hold the stone.
The setting is at least as expressive as the diamond. On pieces from the 18–19 th centuries, closed backs, foil backing, or other dark backings are common, which enhanced contrast under period lighting, primarily candlelight. To achieve a whiter appearance, diamonds were frequently set in silver or in a silver top mounted on a gold base. Discoloration, soldering marks, differing prongs, or disruption of the reverse side may indicate repairs or alterations, but their exact age can only be determined through material testing and structural analysis.
Closed-back or foil-backed jewelry should not be soaked or placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. Moisture can seep behind the setting, alter the appearance of the backing, and damage old solders, other stones, or enamels. The cleaning of such objects is best entrusted to a specialist experienced in antique jewelry.
What Can Be Said for Certain, and What Requires a Laboratory?
A high-quality photograph allows one to observe the stone's outline, approximate facet pattern, open culet, setting type, and major damage. Based on these, a historical cutting family can be hypothesized, but the exact carat weight, color, or clarity grade cannot be reliably established. Within a setting, the metal color and closed back can significantly modify the visual appearance, while prongs can conceal inclusions and damage.
A photograph cannot definitively determine whether a stone is natural, lab-grown, or an imitation. The chemical and optical properties of modern lab-grown diamonds are very close to those of natural diamonds. Screening devices frequently flag stones merely for further testing; final identification requires a gemological laboratory combining multiple methods. The same applies to color treatments, laser drilling, and fracture filling.
In full quality grading, the setting is also a limitation. For credible laboratory determination of color, clarity, and weight, the diamond must usually be unmounted, because the metal influences color perception, conceals part of the stone, and prevents precise weighing. In the case of an antique object, however, the risk of unmounting and preserving the original structure may be more important than obtaining a full grading report. This must be weighed by a specialist in every instance.
When Purchasing, Do Not Only Ask About the 4Cs
The 4Cs—carat weight, color, clarity, and cut—provide a useful common language, but they do not fully describe the value of an antique piece of jewelry. Matters of importance include the object's age, style, craftsmanship, condition, rarity, documented provenance, and the extent to which the stones, settings, and metal parts form a historically coherent whole.
Before purchasing, it is worth clarifying whether the diamond's designation is based on instrument testing or visual inspection; whether any treatments are known; whether the weight is estimated or measured; and if any stone replacements, resetting, ring sizing, or other repairs have taken place. For a higher-value central stone, an independent gemological document may be warranted. For many small, set historical stones, however, an expert condition report of the entire piece of jewelry often provides more useful information than individual grading.

Old Cuts Are Not Flaws, but Historical Choices
It is a common misconception that every irregularity signifies poor workmanship, that every old stone should be recut into a modern one, and that every brightly sparkling stone is a brilliant. In reality, the brilliant is a specific faceting system, and manual asymmetry is part of the original character of many historical stones. Recutting can improve symmetry or remove damage, but it entails loss of weight and can obliterate the optical profile appropriate to the object's era.
The mindful collector therefore does not first ask how closely an antique diamond approaches today's ideal. Instead, they observe what kind of light it creates, how it connects to the setting, and how authentically it preserves the jewelry's history. A sound decision requires the eye, documentation, and expert examination working together. This is what transforms a diamond from a mere valuable material into a readable historical narrative.
