Tiger's Eye – A Special Play of Light

Tiger's eye is a distinctive golden-yellow to brownish variety of quartz, which received its name from its extraordinary optical effect. When the stone is moved, a silky, bright band of light runs across its surface, reminiscent of the glowing pupil of a cat's or tiger's eye. This optical phenomenon is known as chatoyancy, or the cat's-eye effect. The effect is created by fine, fibrous mineral inclusions found within the quartz that are arranged parallel to one another.

The characteristic golden-brown color of tiger's eye is provided by iron-rich mineral components and their transformation products. Its beauty is particularly highlighted in a convex, so-called cabochon cut, as this makes the stone's light-changing, silky radiance truly spectacular. For this reason, it has long been a favored decorative stone in rings, pendants, brooches, and other pieces of jewelry.

Tradition and modern crystal culture associate numerous meanings with tiger's eye. It is considered a stone of strength, courage, self-confidence, and protection, and is often attributed with calming, concentration-enhancing, or spiritual balance-supporting effects. However, these are traditional, spiritual beliefs: the healing or health effects of tiger's eye are not supported by scientific evidence, and therefore they cannot be considered healing properties in a medical sense.

Due to its exceptional play of light and warm, golden shades, tiger's eye remains an easily recognizable and characteristic gemstone—a mineral whose beauty has over time become coupled with a rich world of symbolic meanings.
