At first glance, a ruby may seem simple: a red gemstone whose power is derived entirely from its color. Upon closer inspection, however, this very red becomes complex. It may appear different in daylight and artificial lighting, uniform or patchy, pure or slightly purplish, brilliant or excessively dark. The needle-like inclusions, crystals, and healed fissures visible within the stone may preserve a history, yet how it was cut, how it was set, and what interventions it has undergone are equally important.

Evaluating an antique ruby jewel therefore does not depend on a single striking property. A trained eye first observes, then separates what is visibly certain from what can only be determined by instrumental gemological analysis. This distinction allows us to understand the ruby not merely as a symbol, but as a material and part of a historical object.

When Not Every Red Stone Had an Exact Name

For centuries, the ruby was a symbol of power, vitality, and love. Sanskrit tradition referred to it as "the king of gemstones," and European and Asian courts held deep red stones in particular esteem. However, the word "ruby" in historical sources did not always mean what we call a ruby in a gemological sense today.

Before the development of modern mineralogy, stones of a similar color were often grouped according to their external appearance. Red spinel, for instance, circulated for a long time as "balas ruby," and several famous historical "rubies" were later revealed to actually be spinels. The scientific separation of the two minerals only became definitive at the end of the 18 th century. This holds an important lesson for antique jewelry as well: a traditional designation, family lore, or old inventory entry is not automatically equivalent to a modern laboratory identification.

What Makes a Ruby a Ruby?

The ruby is the red variety of corundum. Corundum consists of aluminum oxide; in its pure state, it is colorless, and its red color is primarily imparted by chromium integrated into its crystal lattice. The other color varieties of the same mineral are called sapphires. At the same time, the boundary between ruby and pink sapphire cannot be drawn with a single, universally identical color swatch. Commercial practice, cultural tradition, and laboratory comparative samples may all play a role in when a stone is considered red rather than pink.

Corundum measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning that after diamond, it ranks among the hardest natural minerals widely used in jewelry. However, this does not mean that every ruby is indestructible. Surface-reaching fractures, heavy inclusions, thin cutting proportions, or certain treatments can increase the risk of damage. Hardness describes resistance to scratching; impact resistance and the condition of the setting are separate matters.

Observing Color: More Than Just "a Pretty Red"

The most important factor in a ruby's value is typically its color. Sought-after stones are vivid, saturated reds or slightly purplish reds, but alongside hue, tone and brilliance are also decisive. A stone that is too dark may display areas bordering on black, while one that is too light may give the impression of a pink sapphire. Color exerts its most powerful effect when it is saturated, yet still retains life and internal light.

The term "pigeon's blood" should be approached with particular caution. Historically, it was used to describe a vivid red, slightly purplish or pinkish tone, enhanced by red fluorescence. Today, however, various standards and differing usages exist behind it as a commercial descriptor. It does not automatically signify Burmese origin, an untreated status, or exceptional quality, nor does it replace an independent laboratory report.

When observing, it is advisable to view the stone against a neutral, preferably white background, in both diffused daylight and warm artificial light. Rotate it slowly: does the hue change, are there dark, lifeless areas, or lighter color zones? Depending on the orientation, a ruby may display slightly differing colors, and the cut either advantageously unifies this or accentuates irregularities.

What the Cut and Internal Landscape Reveal

The cutting of colored gemstones is often a compromise between color, weight, and light return. A ruby cut too flat may exhibit a light "window" in its center, as though one could see right through it. A stone that is too deep or poorly oriented may show large, dark areas. Oval and cushion shapes are common because they adapt well to the shape of the rough crystal, but irregular, hand-formed stones and cabochons also occur in antique jewelry.

A ruby's inclusions are not merely flaws. Fine rutile needles, known as "silk," tiny crystals, color zones, or healed fissures can point to natural formation, the geological environment, and even certain treatments. Pristine rutile silk, for instance, can rule out very high-temperature heating, but it does not prove that the stone was never heated at all. Simple rules are therefore dangerous: a complete story can rarely be written from a single inclusion type.

If the rutile needles are aligned in the proper direction and the stone is cut into a convex cabochon, a six-rayed star may appear upon it under a point light source. In evaluating a star ruby, the sharpness of the star, its centering, movement, body color, and the transparency of the stone count together. The sight of the star does not in itself verify a natural origin, as lab-grown star rubies also exist.

Heated, Filled, or Lab-Grown?

Heat treatment is a long-established and widely practiced procedure for rubies. It can improve color and apparent clarity, as well as modify the inclusion image. A purely heated ruby remains a natural ruby, but the treatment must be disclosed at the time of purchase. Untreated, high-quality stones are rarer, and with appropriate laboratory certification, they can command a significant premium.

Other interventions alter the appearance and durability of the stone more substantially. Fractures filled with lead-glass can become much less visible, making a material that was originally heavily fractured appear more transparent. Such stones may be more sensitive to chemicals and thermal shock during repairs. Diffusion treatments can introduce color near the surface or deeper; in the case of a shallow color layer, damage or recutting can also affect the color.

Synthetic, or lab-grown, rubies are not glass imitations. They are essentially the same material as natural rubies, but crystallized under artificial conditions. The Verneuil flame-fusion process made mass production possible around the turn of the 19–20 th century, and significant quantities entered the market by the early 1900 s. Consequently, a genuinely antique mounting, even from the Art Deco period, does not automatically prove that the ruby set within it is natural.

Under a microscope, curved growth lines, gas bubbles, or certain flux remnants can aid in identification, but the image is not always textbook. In some synthetic stones, even natural-looking, fingerprint-like patterns have been created. Certain identification often requires spectroscopy, trace element analysis, and an experienced gemologist.

Origin Cannot Be Read Solely from Color

The descriptors "Burmese," "Thai," "Ceylonese," or "Mozambican" carry strong market significance, yet they should not be used as a simple color formula. No single locality produces rubies of exclusively one hue and quality, and stones from different localities can overlap in appearance. Origin determination based on color is therefore at best an impression, not proof.

To evaluate origin, gemological laboratories examine the inclusion image, trace element composition, and spectroscopic data together. Even so, results can sometimes remain inconclusive. An "inconclusive" finding in such cases is not a shortcoming, but a professionally correct limitation marker. Neither origin, treatment, nor natural versus synthetic provenance can be reliably established from a photograph alone.

Antique Jewel, Stone of a Separate History

In antique and vintage jewelry, the mounting and the gemstone must be examined simultaneously, but not as elements of the same history. An antique ruby may have been later reset in a new mounting, or the lost stone of a period ring might have been replaced decades later. Uneven wear on prongs, fresh solder joints, a modified stone bed, an unusually fresh surface, or a cut alien to the style of the setting can all warrant further investigation.

Hallmarks, structural solutions, backside craftsmanship, and the cuts of accompanying stones can help determine age, but no single sign is decisive on its own. A proper object description treats the presumed age of the jewel, the metal material, the identification of the stones, any potential repairs, and the result of the gemological analysis separately.

The rhythm of the composition, the uniformity of the settings, the height of the stones, wear, and any replacements together reveal how coherent the piece of jewelry is.

What to Ask Before Buying

For a more valuable ruby jewel, five questions are particularly important: is the stone natural or lab-grown; is heat treatment or any other intervention detectable; is an independent laboratory report available; what repairs or stone replacements have been carried out on the piece; and what is the condition of the setting? The report should serve as a concrete source of information rather than a general "certificate": it may contain identification, dimensions, color description, detectable treatments, and—if ascertainable—an origin opinion.

For daily care, lukewarm, mildly soapy water is the safest baseline solution. For a ruby of unknown treatment or fracture-filled nature, ultrasonic and steam cleaning, as well as acidic household agents, must be avoided. In the case of antique settings, a jeweler must check both the prongs and solder joints prior to cleaning.

Ultimately, a ruby's true quality is not composed of a high-sounding origin descriptor or a romantic legend. A compelling piece has a living color, a purposeful cut, an interpretable internal landscape, a disclosed treatment history, and a mounting that is both secure and historically coherent. The conscious collector does not seek a flawless stone at all costs, but rather a jewel whose beauty and documented reality are in harmony.
