Precious opal may easily seem inscrutable at first glance. It does not act with a single, constant color like a ruby or a sapphire, but responds to movement: beneath the surface, flashes of green, blue, orange, or red light appear and then vanish as the stone or light source is turned. Precisely for this reason, an opal cannot be truly judged on the basis of a single front-facing photograph. A fine piece not only yields a pleasing image, but comes alive from multiple directions, and its play-of-color is in harmony with the cutting, the setting, and the overall character of the jewel.

Nor does the designation "precious opal" simply mean that an opal is valuable or rare. In a gemmological sense, we call those opals precious opals that display a play-of-color. This optical phenomenon is created when regularly arranged, extremely minute particles of silicon dioxide within the interior of the stone break white light down into various colors. Common opal belongs to the same material family, but lacks such an ordered internal structure, and therefore does not flash spectral colors.

The Global Career of a Central European Gemstone

The history of opal is far older than modern gemstone trading. Roman authors in antiquity already described it as a stone that unites the colors of several known gemstones. In medieval Europe, religious, protective, and lucky meanings were associated with it; gold-mounted opal rings and brooches bear witness to this. By contrast, the notion of the opal bringing bad luck is not an ancient, universal tradition, but spread mainly under the influence of 19 th-century literature and later popular stories.

From a Hungarian perspective, the historical mining region of Červenica–Dubník, located in the territory of present-day eastern Slovakia, is of particular interest. For centuries, the deposit was Europe's most important source of precious opal and belonged among the mineral treasures of the historical Kingdom of Hungary. At the end of the 19 th century, the commercial rise of Australian deposits fundamentally rearranged the market. It was then that opal became accessible in greater quantities while continuing to preserve its unique character, which is difficult to standardize.

Art Nouveau jewellers of the turn of the century were particularly fond of it. The shifting colors of the stone lent themselves well to floral forms, asymmetry, enamel, and irregular pearls. In the works of René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the opal was not merely an expensive center stone, but a material that defined the mood of the composition. Art Deco in the 1920 s and 1930 s brought tighter geometry, stronger contrasts, and denser stone settings. Precious opal at this time frequently appeared within a framework of diamonds, white metal details, or gold. The Art Deco rings, brooches, and the piece wearable as both necklace and brooch that can be seen in the selection of Opera Antikvitás clearly illustrate how diverse a role the very same gemstone could be given.

First the Body-Color, Then the Play-of-Color

It is worth beginning the observation of an opal with two separate questions. What is the stone's base color, or body-color? And what play-of-color appears against this background?

White opal flashes its colors from a light, milky-white, or cream-colored background. The body-color of a black or dark opal can be gray, brown, or near-black, which is why the patches of light appear in stronger contrast. Crystal opal is translucent or partially transparent, as if the play-of-color were floating within the interior of the stone. Fire opal is a yellow, orange, or reddish body-colored opal; it may have a play-of-color, but it is not mandatory. Thus, "fire opal" is not a synonym for a particularly vibrant precious opal.

Similar caution is necessary with the designation "blue opal". This may refer to a bluish body-color, a blue-dominated play-of-color, or simply a commercial description. In itself, it does not state the deposit, natural origin, or untreated status. Nor does a dark background automatically prove a black opal: the dark effect can also be provided by a natural matrix, an artificial backing, dye, or a closed setting.

It is advisable to turn the stone slowly in diffused daylight or a lamp of neutral color temperature, against a dark background. Let us observe what proportion of the surface the play-of-color covers, how intense it is, how many colors appear, and whether it is visible only from a narrow angle. A strong flash of color in itself is not enough if large, lifeless areas remain alongside it. A well-balanced stone shows color from multiple directions, and the pattern does not break apart within the setting.

What Makes a Precious Opal Fine?

Quality cannot be described by a single number or rigid grading. The most important factor is usually the brightness of the play-of-color. This is followed by the variety of colors, the pattern, the viewing angle, the transparency, and the condition of the stone. Red and orange flashes may be rarer, but an opal with exclusively blue-green play-of-color can also be exceptional if it is bright, extensive, and characteristic. Personal taste plays a greater role here than with many other gemstones.

The pattern may consist of tiny dots, broad patches, flame-like features, or a mosaic. Commercial fancy names can aid description, but do not replace actual observation. There can be a significant difference in quality between two stones offered under the name "harlequin", and not every irregular patch of color can be professionally termed a harlequin pattern.

The cut is mostly cabochon: a smooth, convex surface without facets. This is not a simpler, inferior solution, but a form suited to the optical characteristics of the opal. A well-formed dome shows colors from multiple directions, and careful polishing does not distort or blur the image. With a too-flat stone, the visual impact may be weaker and the edge more vulnerable; with a too-high dome, setting and everyday wear may prove cumbersome.

Condition is particularly important. A spiderweb-like fine network of cracks, known as crazing, is not a natural "charm of aging", but a durability issue. Let us examine the surface for scratches, chips, depressions, and matte spots as well. With an antique jewel, some sign of wear is acceptable, but a cracked, shifting, or damaged edge of the stone may already affect safe wearability.

Solid Stone, Doublet, or Triplet?

Solid natural opal is a stone cut from a single piece of opal. A doublet consists of a thin layer of precious opal and a dark backing glued to it. In the case of a triplet, a transparent, convex capping layer is also joined to this, which may be made of quartz or glass, for example. These are not necessarily worthless or dishonest objects. They can be decorative and wearable, but they contain significantly less precious opal, so their construction must be clearly disclosed.

When viewed from the side or the back, the layer boundary, the gluing plane, or the meeting of different materials can sometimes be recognized. In a closed setting, however, this is not always visible. Natural boulder opal may retain dark matrix, but that is not a glued backing: it is part of the geological unity of the stone. Surely distinguishing between the two cases often requires magnification and experience.

The recognition of laboratory-created opal and imitations is even more complex. Certain overly regular, columnar, or "lizardskin" patterns can arouse suspicion, but deceptive structures can also occur in natural stones. The same applies to treatments. Opals may be dyed, smoked, darkened via a sugar-acid process, or impregnated with oil, wax, or synthetic resin. Certain interventions cannot be proven with the naked eye or a simple loupe.

A significant portion of Ethiopian opals are hydrophane, meaning they are porous and capable of absorbing liquid. This can temporarily alter transparency and play-of-color, and porosity can also permit the introduction of dye or other substances. Therefore, home water tests must not be performed: immersion can be risky, and the result in itself verifies neither deposit nor treatment. Determining natural or laboratory origin, treatment, and in many cases the region of origin is the task of a gemmological laboratory. Based on a photograph, these can at best be deemed probable.

What Does the Setting Reveal About the Age of the Jewel?

With an antique jewel, the stone and the setting must be read together. The hallmark, fineness mark, maker's mark, and any date letter can be important guideposts, but the system of marks varies by country and period. A missing or blurred hallmark does not prove a forgery; it could also have partially disappeared during resizing, repair, or heavy wear.

The structure is at least as eloquent. It is worth examining the method of setting, the color of the solders, the pin mechanism, the hinges, the wear of the ring shank, and whether signs of use appear consistently. Fresh solder, a metal element of a different color, or a stone poorly fitting the setting may indicate later repair or alteration. This does not necessarily render the jewel worthless, but it influences its historical unity and its price.

The cut of accompanying diamonds can also provide a clue. Rose-cut is a centuries-old form, so its presence in itself does not prove an Art Deco date: older stones could be re-set in later jewels as well. Conversely, a modern brilliant-cut diamond in an old setting may be a later replacement. Dating always requires the concordant examination of multiple signs.

With convertible jewels, it is particularly important to distinguish original multi-functional design from later re-mounting. A central section detachable from a necklace and wearable as a brooch may be period-appropriate, deliberate construction. A subsequently soldered-on loop or pin, however, is a different type of intervention. The fit, metal material, and wear of the fittings reveal a great deal, but object examination is required for a definite conclusion.

Five Questions Worth Asking Before Purchase

  • Is it a solid natural opal, boulder opal, doublet, or triplet?
  • Is any treatment known or detectable, and will this be recorded in writing?
  • Are there cracks, crazing, chips, or prior stone replacement?
  • Which details substantiate the stated age, and which remain estimates?
  • Has there been resizing, setting repair, brooch–pendant conversion, or other structural intervention?

For a higher-value piece, it is advisable to request an independent gemmological examination or a detailed condition report. It is important to know that the laboratory identifies the opal, can establish its natural or laboratory origin and detectable treatments, but does not necessarily give a uniform quality grading of the kind we are accustomed to with diamonds.

Wear and Care: The Price of Beauty is Attention

The hardness of opal is medium and its toughness is variable, which is why it is more vulnerable in a ring than in an earring, pendant, or brooch. For a ring, a more protected setting enclosing the stone is advantageous, and it is prudent to remove the jewel before physical work, sports, gardening, or cleaning.

For cleaning, lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth may be used. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning, hot water, strong chemicals, sudden temperature changes, and prolonged, intense heat are to be avoided. With doublets and triplets, prolonged soaking is particularly risky due to the glued layers. In the case of an old setting, it is advisable to have the stone checked prior to cleaning to ensure it does not move.

The essence of conscious opal purchasing is not trying to decipher every stone like a laboratory instrument. Rather, it is asking precise questions, observing from multiple directions, and not accepting a single sonorous designation as proof. A fine precious opal is not merely brighter or more colorful than the others. The play-of-color, the cut, the condition, and the setting together constitute an authentic, wearable, and collectible object.
